We need a new forum…Hogarthian Gear Configuration

I’ve noticed that there are many questions on this board about Hogarthian gear configuration.

Sometimes these questions are placed in the Basic forum or in sub-forums of Gear but more often than not they end up in the DIR forum…probably because the poster mistakenly assumes that DIR = Hogarthian. If the poster is looking for responses from DIR divers only, then that’s appropriate.

But there are many on this board who are not DIR that have experience with this gear configuration that are not DIR. I, for one, would like to be able to discuss these things without having to do so in the DIR forum. The DIR forum should be for DIR divers and for those non-DIR folks looking for DIR answers. Often, responders to these questions that are dropped in the DIR Forum are challenged because they aren’t card-carrying DIR. I don’t have a problem with that…after all, the discussion is in the DIR Forum. Yet, it would be nice to have a place to discuss these matters without all the hoop-la that often ensues… a place to discuss these things without offending the DIR and in return not being offended by them.

I know…we already have enough forums. Maybe we could replace the DIR Free Zone with something constructive!

Just a thought…

Come on. Don't you know that divers who apply Hogarthian gear configurations to their diving are really just stroke/DIR-wannabees who are trying to learn DIR on the Internet?? Sheeech! Don't you read the posts. ;) Diving with one of these long-hose & pony solo diving death with a tank divers will get you killed for sure! :D

I think this is a good idea.

DIR is more than just gear configuration, many aspects of the philosophy are worthy but there are divers out there who can appreciate the configuration without adpoting the other tennents of DIR. I have read "Doing It Right: The Fundamentals of Better Diving" by Jarrod Jablonski, and I will probably in the future take a DIR-F class, but at this time I disagree with at least some of the points in the book. My taking the class will allow me to make a more informed decision about the larger issues. I can benefit now, and have been for a while, from the Hogarthian setup.

My gear configuration does differ slightly from DIR, I put my Sartek battery cannister on the side of my backplate, not my hip, and I like a right side hip D-ring. I sling deco bottles on both sides not just my left. I think the long hose is a REALLY good idea and I have adopted it, along with the necklace and short hose for my alternate second stage. Do these things make me evil? I don't think so. Can they make me a better diver? Possibly, at least with a more robust gear configuration that has few if any dangly bits I am able to deal with situations more quickly and predictably.

A single area for dealing with these issues seems to me to be a good choice. DIR is by its own admission more rigid in the gear configuration than what I percieve to be a generic Hogarthian setup.

I do however see many problems as everyone will have their personal idea of what is best. This will certainly lead to lots of interesting and spirited debates on just what is best. This could spin out of control if not watched carefully. This is an area where DIR has a distinct advantage, the guidelines for gear configuration are fairly simple and have few grey areas.

Your quite right. It's a bit tricky. Hogarthian is Hogarthian and is best described in the gear configuration of the DIR diver. I would hate to see the configuration wacked out with personal permutations. In a way DIR is the protector of this configuration...at least until Bill Main or some of the other original WKKP fellas comes back to pick up the banner. But the setup has pretty much come to be well known and standardized...a debt we owe to DIR.

I just want a place to talk about it without my knowledge and EXPERIENCE being questioned because I haven't taken "the class". All to often the "experts" that answer these questions presume that they have all the answers because they've been DIR-F'd, when their experience level is...well...lacking. It seems a bit upside down. I mean, come on...you've seen it ...the newly DIR-F'd with a dozen dives lecturing a guy that's been diving a hog rig for years.

Nah, that would never happen :D...

I'd love to see a hog forum...

Good idea.

I want to do the Hogarthian setup with a 20ft hose for the primary, can anyone give me some advice???

I'd like to see it too, and for what it's worth, I don't think the spirited discussions that will stem from everyone having their personal idea of what is best will be a negative thing. Since there isn't a standardized way (DIR notwithstanding), discussing the pros and cons of different variations will likely be interesting and informative. It could spin out of control, but I think the most likely cause of that would be argumentative DIR advocates insisting that anything but their way is a waste of time and/or dangerous.

If the discussions can focus on the "why" rather than on the "what", I think it could be a great idea.
