Scuba diver, 45, dies after incident at Wawaloli Beach on the Big Island

KALAOA, Hawaii (KITV4) -- Police on the Big Island are investigating after a scuba diver died in the waters off Wawaloli Beach over the weekend.
The incident happened around noon on Sunday at Wawaloli Beach, also known as Otec.
Hawaii Island police were initially called out to the area on a report of a diver in distress. According to investigators, the victim – later identified as 45-year-old Conrad Haleamau – went unresponsive while diving and was brought to shore by bystanders.
The bystanders were performing CPR on Haleamau when police and first responders arrived. He was taken to the Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 1:10 p.m.

A coroner’s inquest was started and an autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigators did not say if Haleamau was diving alone or with a group at the time of the incident. No other injuries were reported.
Haleamau is a Kaliua-Kona resident, police said.
