Any recommendations?

Canon has theirs rated for 130 ft and I have read that it's positively bouyant.

Then theirs the Ikelite which is rated to 200 ft and is slighty negatively bouyant claiming to have some built in weights.

Ikelite claim theirs is nearly neutrally bouyant... Prices are $160 for the Canon vs $280 for the Ikelite.

I would be a recreational diver maybe dropping to 150-160 ft in near future.

The dimensions are sligtly larger for the Ikelite...

So what do underwater photographers prefer? Slightly negative or Positively bouyant...

Thanks

MG

p.s here is the link to the Ikelite

Underwater Housing for Canon SD800 IS Camera

Patience ;)

I wouldn't spend the extra for an Ikelite housing for an SD Canon, myself. But if you are going to head deep, it might be worth it. No manual controls on the SDs means they are a bit limited - still good cameras, but not as flexible.

You can easily add a small weight to a housing to make it negative or neutral. I don't mind my Canon housings slightly positive; my Subal rig is negative.

Which do you prefer; negative or positive bouyancy with your two cameras?

Thanks,

MG

The positive of the Canon doesn't bother me at all.

My Subal would bother me if it was positive. It's better negative.

They are two different rigs and used for different things.

The buoyancy of a rig wouldn't even make my list of things to think about when buying...

If you ever add a tray and/or strobe the thing will be negative, too.

Alcina,

I ordered the Canon case along with the weights made by Canon so it should be a perfect match; my camera should be negative...

I kept my budget a lot cheaper than if I would have gotten the Ikelite and the Canon case is so much smaller than the ikelite... Big difference....

I'll be happy to display any pics I might get and of course live video since my camera will capture up to 46 minutes of continous play... I have a very large memory card that I invested in...

I have the same camera and am looking for the housing. Are there other options to the Canon housing? I found a new one on amazon for 135-. I'm new to photography but am going to St Lucia in a few weeks and thought I'd try it out. Thanks

yeah... I would go with the canon; since you will not be needing the ttl function that the ikelites offer on other models. The canon housings are more compact and have controls that are easier to use. I had one for my SD 550 and thought it worked great.
