Waterproof bag - Cell phone, Radio, or GPS

Have you ever used a waterproof bag like Aquapac?

Based on their description, it is 30ft rated though. I would like to hear any real experience.


I don't intend to use this bag in UW, but I am looking for a bag that can be a waterproof in 15ft depth range.

Do you have any problem to hear/talk through the bag?
Do you have any experience to drop it to the ocean?

Aquapac from our experience make good packs and for phones you can hear through them with little difficulty. As for taking them under water we have never tried on purpose (and a pac in good condition has saved many the phone) as here they are mostly used for cell phones which are not intended divers anyway. If you are looking for a case for a camera I would check with the manufacturer and invest in the housing designed specifically for the camera. The proper case will allow better instrument manipulation under water and usually provides a set of guarantees for an expensive piece of dive gear! Best of luck

If your purpose is to protect your electronic gadgets in case they fall overboard & sink to 15 feet or so, these bags work OK. But if you expect to actually use GPS or a cell phone while underwater, you'll be dissapointed since radio waves in those frequency bands have very poor, if any, penetration in water. Only very low radio frequencies can travel any distance through water. Thank god for that, since the last thing I need is to be answering cell phones during a dive.

I'll second that. Keep the gadgets for the surface...in a waterproof bag of course, and let us explore Atlantis without them.

Pelican cases work very well as well if the gadget doesn't have to be accessible while wet

Nope! I never intend to use a cell phone/camera/GPS in UW, NEVER.:no

My inquiry starts from

1. If I can use a cell phone/two radio/GPS while I am floating on the surface? That is, even after accidently I drop it into water, can I use it without expecting any water drops into a bag


2. If this bag is really floating when I drop it? I don't want to go down to pick it up.


3. What if the bag is below 15ft? For example, I put some heavy GPS into the bag and it is sinking due to the slightly negative buoyancy. If a bag is below 15ft, the water definitely gets into a bag?


A lot of newbie question.

In other words can you put a GPS in the bag and use it to map a lake. My bet is that the signal won't be strong enough.
I have a small Pelican case that I would sell. Perfect size for a GPS.

If it is a single push button why not a bladder and stick from a video housing. They can be bought cheap. If the bag would work better then that much easier.
