Haven't been over to Casino Point for awhile now and am curious what the current water temps might be.

I would appreciate some feedback into recent temps.

Thanks.

Our first dive was relatively warm ( I think 63 or so.) I heard it was cooler below 50-60 ft., but did not go looking for the thermocline. Viz was not stellar, but decent. Second dive, I don't recall the temperature, but it was noticeably colder, maybe 59, judging by the small area of my exposed face. I was diving dry, so it was not residual chill. Viz had deteriorated considerably, and not just due to more divers in the water.

Just trying to figure out whether to pack the 7 or 3 mil for this weekend.

Unless you want to be a popsicle, you definitely want the 7mm. The thermoclines over the past few weeks have been very noticeable all over the So Cal region and divers have mentioned numerous times how cold they were in their 7mms and drysuits.

I will dive a 7mm and a hooded vest, boots, gloves, etc. Do yourself a favor and do the same!

See you Saturday!

Temps at the top of the water column are 65 - 69. Temps below the thermocline (40' - 50') are in the mid 50's. Brrrrrrr.

If the last couple of summers are any indication, vis will start declining soon and bottom out at a full red tide. The cold water is an upwelling that brings lots of oxygenated water up to the phytoplankton, which bloom and feed the zooplankton, which causes the red tide that we all know & love. Better get the dives in quickly before the vis heads south!

So this means you are back on the Coast? Is this a temporary or permanent relocation?

I have been home for the past 2 weeks. I fly out tonight to go back to work, but only for a couple of weeks. I will be back on the west coast, permanent (?), nothing is permanent is it? But hopefully I will be here for sometime. At least until I get tired of the cold water :11:

BTW, it was really nice meeting Kelphelper yesterday. Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet the rest of the group, maybe next time. The wife and I are planning on being regulars over on Catalina again. IF ONLY I COULD GET RID OF THE 7 MIL.

Also, the water temp at the surface was 68, and it steadily lowered the deeper we got. My computer gave me a 59 degree reading at a depth of 45 fsw, on the Avalon side of the park, but 61 on the Descanso Beach side of the park.

It was a great day and we enjoyed our dives, but the 2 1/2 hour SI waiting for air refills was a little annoying. We had to cut our 2nd dive short so we could get to the boat on time. :11:

It was nice to meet both of you also! I am so glad you had your pix posted in your profile or I never would have picked you out of the 100's of divers there on Saturday.

No kidding! I wonder if Saturdays are to be avoided for awhile. Sunday was SO much less crowded and the fills were timely.
