Whenever I turn my head certain positions or at certain angles, I get water rushing into my ear. I immediately turn my head back to stop it. At the end of the dive I can usually shake the water out or turn my head to the side and let it drain.

Is this normal?

I always thought it was, but I see DMs seemingly turn their heads in all sorts of positions without any issues. I see them go inverted or look underneath them effortlessly...am I doing something wrong???

Yes of course. The ear canal is completely open up to the eardrum - water is expected to get in. In fact the only times when you won't have water in your ear is when you get an air bubble in (usually from your reg exhaust), replacing the water. Turn your head, air gets out, water goes back in. Nothing wrong with that.

Do you not get water in your ear when you take a shower, or go for a swim??

You're not doing anything wrong ... they're getting water in their ears too ... they're just used to it, so it doesn't bother them.

I think we might be interpreting "in" in two different ways (like Bill Clinton's "is")...yes, obviously I get water in my ear when I shower, just not down the ear canal...not sure if that makes sense.

Water routinely goes into the ear canal when you dive. That is why a lot of divers use ear drops after diving to help dry the ear canals and prevent infection. If the sensation bothers you, try a hood or beanie or maybe Doc's Proplugs.

It should, at least if you tilt your head so that the water doesn't just flow right out again.

If water doesn't readily flow in and out of your ears, you may have a buildup of ear wax blocking the flow (I know I have that problem). Might be worth having checked out at your GP if that's the case.

Going inverted and looking underneath oneself is an effortless thing to do. If water in your ears is causing some sort of pain then there is a problem...

No pain at all, really just the feeling of getting water rushing in is annoying
