I currently dive with Cressi Frogs, but every time I go to my LDS I find myself eyeing the Scuba-Pro Jet Fins and the Oceanic Vortex fins. Am I evolving? What difference could I anticipate with either of these fins? My dives are mostly open water, in the ocean. Anyone out there recommend this fin mutation?
Thanks for your input.

Hi JAW,

There was a thread on split fins a week or so ago, do a search for it, I think it was called "split fins". There was some good discussions on them. I personally don't like them (tried them once in a pool and compaired them to my Mares). I think I was about the only one who did not like them or at least the only one who would admit it. In general, seems like comments went something like , more speed, less leg fatigue but with a loss on control. Best advise is to rent/borrow a pair and try them for yourself.

JAW, I've used Jet Fins for decades. I have tried others from time to time, but I've yet to find anything better. You can't go wrong with Jets. They will last practically forever and they are not super expensive like many others.

Walter,
Any relationship to "Twin Jets" that "Jets" may have is in name only. They are entirely different in looks, performance and price. I do believe JAW means "Twin" when he says "Jet"...

If Rick is correct, you are talking about either of two split fins.

I've owned Apollo Bio-Fins, Mares Volos and Mares Quattros, plus used or owned a few others .

The split fins really do work as advertised. For general diving they are great. While some have pooh-poohed them for various reasons, they perform exceptionally well. There are some things they do not do as well as paddles, but they still do them, e.g. turning, alternate kicks. The only thing I did not like was the folding over during pool sessions where you do a lot of standing with students. The other thing they just don't do is skulling backwards. I'm a photographer and this is important. Also, you can't do a little skulling to maintain an exact position as well. I did love them though for cruising the reef.

Cressi Frogs are very similar to Quattros and are excellent fins. Not too soft, not too stiff, not too heavy. If you are happy with what you've got and aren't weak legged, I'd stick with the Frogs. They look good, too.
