how cold does water have to be for a reg to freeze up??
I am currently looking to buy a octo for my pony and I dont plan on diving colder then 50 degrees, any recommendations on a reg??
should I go with a cheapie or spend a little more??

50degF (or 10degC) is the cut-off point that Apeks use for defining a cold water reg. Therefore any apeks reg will be fine for 50+. Not sure on other brands but they are probably similar. Check the specs on the manufacturer's website.
