Thanks for sharing. You have received a lot of sound advice here that I will not repeat. But since I assume you usually dive with your husband, I do have a suggestion you may find helpful.

One nice thing about having a regular Dive Buddy, whether it is your spouse or not, is that you can become more fluent in your hand signals. Work out ahead of time what different signals you might want to use, and practice them on land until you don't have to think about them. Someone else mentioned a slate, which is very handy for communicating something you haven't agreed on a hand signal for.

I have even heard of diving couples taking a sign language course in order to be able to communicate more fluently underwater.

I frequently travel alone and often have little choice but to dive with "instabuddies", but I still go over hand signals before the dive, just so we are both on the same page. When you dive with the same people on a regular basis, you can get a much larger 'vocabulary'.
