My group is headed to Wakatobi in Nov 08. We have two days in Bali to recover from the flights from the States. Looking for a mid-scale cottage/bungalow style accomodations. Any ideas?

Absolutely. Head straight for Ubud, a bit over an hour from the airport, and check into the Hotel Tjampuhan Spa. You'll be experiencing a piece of Balinese history in the cultural center of Bali. Hourly shuttle (or do the 10 minute walk) into the town center. The Tjampuhan was our unwinder before Wakatobi, and I would recommend it to anyone. I'd spring for a Raja room, which is their upgrade to air conditioning as opposed to a fan. PM me if you'd like any more info. I have a few Tjampuhan pics online at Flickr: Photos from hidesert47

Thanks High Desert. This has been my inclination to head up to Ubud. As I'm traveling with a small group I am trying to develop a consensus. The other option is to stay closer to the airport for our shuttle to Wakatobi.

Your photos of the hotel and Wakatobi are great.

Kajane in Ubud is excellent as well.

That can be a plus if you're on the early shuttle to the resort. The second shuttle leaves around midday, so no problem being in Ubud. If you want to be in Kuta, close to the airport, my recommendation for a beautiful, quiet spot 100 yards from the beach would be

Bali hotel Green Garden Resort & Spa hotel Kuta Beach discount hotel in Bali Green Garden Resort & Spa hotel

If you stay near the airport, I would still recommend a day trip to Ubud.

Thanks for the tips. Highdesert - How did you like stay and the diving at Wakatobi?

I do remember reading your trip report. Everthing you've mentioned is very well explained. We are really looking towards our first trip out of the Caribbean!

There's 5 main tourist area within 1 hour from the airport; from the nearest : Jimbaran, Kuta (incl. tuban, legian and seminyak), nusa dua (incl. benoa), sanur and ubud. Some people hate the crowded of kuta but the other love it. Nusa dua inc. benoa is more for mid and upscale market.
Check this web site Bayu Buana Hotels the most reputable local travel agent. Select bali and area as mentioned above - you'll get lot of choices. Please note most of the listed prices are for local or resident only. few for all market, but you can check the price or try to e-mail them. Almost impossible you will get better prices. We always use this company, stayed more than 20 hotels and resorts in Bali; so far okay; no bad hotel, at least so so, good or excelent. Bali hotel market is very competitive now.

I would skip the Hotel Tjampuhan Spa. We were there about two weeks ago, and checked out after a night. Eveything is nice, but it is a long walk into Ubud and its actually pretty run down for the cost.

We went to the Fibra Inn on Monkey Forest Road, got a similar room, with a beautiful pool with decorated with Bali statues, garden, etc, for just 150,000 rupiah a night. Plus, the rooms there actually were furnished with more native furniture and art than the Tjampuhan.

Best part, was the private outdoor bathroom complete with one of the statues of a woman pouring water from a vase that doubles as a shower. Sexy!

Tjampuhan's garden and the view was better, of course, but overall not a good value in my opinion.
