Hello, I was just wondering how long did it took you guys to start your open water dive course after filling up the papers and taking note of your sizes of the gears? I did my Padi eLearning online and I'm trying to do the open water course in person. I've been waiting 3 months so far and I'm wondering why is it taking so long. I tried calling them and they said they would call me back and still waiting.

I'm from Canada and winter is coming soon so I don't think I'll start my course before next year.

Where in Canada are you located? In Vancouver we dive all year, and the shops will give you a schedule as soon as as you sign up.

Especially in summer they may be booked up and the start date my not be as soon as you like, but you get one set right away usually wth the possibility to waitlist for earlier dates in case of drop outs.

I'm in Quebec. I'm so eager to get my open water dive certification. I saw on their website they are doing the discover open dive at the indoor pools so I called them to know what's going on with that. They said they are already full for September. I had hoped I would start in September considering I got a call in August telling me I would start in September.

I was told I would get a call back but idk when exactly. At this point, I think they will make me start next year or they will still do one more course before winter hits?

I did mine in Dartmouth (Halifax) with no problems. Signed up maybe late August and did the course in Oct. Of course no e learning in 2005 so it was 3 weeks of classes.

Hmm. I did my eLearning and was told I could do my practice over the weekends only for like 3-4 weeks straight. I'm guessing every shop has different ways to schedule their courses?

Yeah. The courses here are one weekend pool, next weekend ocean (after e learning and a bit of review and the written test of course). Back in '05 they did have "weekend" courses but the norm was 3 weeks of Tues. & Thurs. nights (some classroom, some pool each night). Then the following weekend the ocean check out dives. I think they still do that but not as often since e learning came in the last few years. Having assisted on "weekend" OW course often, I was glad I did the 3 week classroom thing. There is IMO a lot to digest when all the pool skills are done on one weekend.
