WA ZOOM-R with rechargeable batteries

I have recently purchased one of these torches and it does not want to switch on when using rechargeable 18650 batteries. It is fine with the small ones but really wanted to use it with rechargeables.

Any reason for this and what can I do to get it running the way I want to. Tried everything from torch varieties to high discharge vaping batteries with no success...
