Not so much a dive report, just a conditions report - 2/6/10
So with all the rains we've been having, I took the chance and planned to stay in the Leon/Wakulla area for a dive on Saturday. We had hoped to get lucky and find one of the springs divable as they are typically a bit more resiliant than the river sinks. First strike, I forget my computer, damnit - no biggy, I have backup tables. The first sink I visit, is exactly what I expected to find, lots of tannic water and blown out conditions.
After a few potential sinks, which were all flooded and some likely didn't even have water in them when the area hadn't just experienced several inches of rain. I decided to take a look at another one. This one doesn't seem to connect to the river sinks, but I still expected it to be blown out. The waters were several feet higher than my last visit onsite, but I was completely wrong about it being blown.
Friggin beautiful, but I had planned to meet up with rox@ucf to dive a spring in Wakulla, so I left this gem and headed out south.
Once onsite, we took a look at the slough we'd have to tromp up to access the spring we wanted to dive and were happy to find clear water. It was higher than normal and the current was kickin, but all clear, so we went back to the vehicle to set up our gear. Unfortunately, I had a tank down - not sure if it had leaked down, or just never got filled, but one things for certain... I didn't have enough gas to make a worthwhile dive considering the trouble we'd have to go through to get to the spring. We had a few options for airfills, we went to the old location of Gregg Stanton's shop(aka, his house) but he had already moved all his compressors to his new building. So we tried one of the local recreational shops and found it unoccupied, despite being Saturday during their open hours. There was a number to call for service, but we got no response and ended up with too little time to go anywhere else and make the WCDC meeting. We did end up checking on one other spring before the spring we intended on diving, it was blue-green and clear too.
Our consolation prize was some awesome BBQ at Hammoknockers in Crawfordville. Afterwards, it was pointed out that I didn't have my second tank... I had left it at the recreational shop, so another trip there to pick it up... I just wasn't on my game that Saturday, probably best I didn't dive. Hit up the WCDC meeting(picked up theawesomefish on the out-of-the-way), got to watch a neat little cave video, then headed to jmaddox's place for some food and fun.
It was a good day of sightseeing, but I hated not being able to dive.
