Mike is correct. Use the guy who rents the canoes by Cypress Spring. It is far cheaper, and his place is right by the boat launch.

I'll let someone else answer "how far it is". but you can rent a canoe right there at the put in for Cypress. so no need to transport one. However, Vortex does rent them and allows them to be taken to Cypress also.

Here is a thread on Cypress canoe rentals. has number, info, etc

Check hotels at Defuniak Springs (sp?) since you're coming from LA. it's 25 min to the Springs, Morrison is a nicer dive than Vortex.

I personally would not stay at any of the "motels" in the area unless you like the movie "No Vacancy". PCB, google a bunch under " panama city dive charters"

Last time I called the canoe folks at Culpepper Lane had done the Panhandle Two-Step and were no longer in business.

The Ponce de Leon Motel is as nice as you'll find in a rural town. The lodging at Vortex is good too as long as you are not expecting the Ritz Carlton. If you want any symblance of luxury it's the Best Western in De Funiak They have fine cuisine there. Whattaburger and MacDonalds are across the street. Or maybe if you have high pockets the historic Hotel DeFuniak.

Morrison might have been a nicer dive than Vortex 25 years ago but with silt an arm length deep there is only the Cypress roots or the cavern (I call it a cave.) I quote from a coworker who did his checkout dives in Morrison. "Well me and my buddy were descending and the water was really clear. I had trouble with my ears and went back up. By the time I got back down I couldn't see nothing."

Vortex is nice during the week or early morning when there aren't a hundred fifty bottom fowlers there.

Cypress is superb anytime except when Holmes Creek is coming over the berm.

The best way to make Morrison a great dive is by NOT plunging into the silt :P I've always had some excellent OW dives at Morrison, the run itself can be quite fun and give you lots of opportunities to run into a much larger variety of life than at Vortex... and none of them will be goldfish.

Its not Morrison't fault when a diver kicks the silt up.

thanks for all the advise guys! We are planning on diving thursday at vortex so it shouldn't be too dirty. I will try and call the phone number found on the other thread about cypress spring and see about the canoe rental unless anyone knows for sure?????
I'm just hoping this doesn't spark me wanting to get into cave diving........i'm broke from buying gear as it is!

Even if it does spark a cave diving interest, get lots of diving in before you start the process and start keeping in mind more tech suitable purchases when you buy gear from here on out. Definately look into getting lots of time in the water before continuing into overhead training.

Just FYI.. Morrison got several of us into cave diving.. Dont go into shock when you see the price for the cave gear.

I just got my zeagle flathead VI in last week so I guess that is some what of a start.
Everyone I know that is intrested in scuba diving says hell no when I mention caves or caverns. I do need alot more time in the water before getting into overhead training but I guess that is a good excuise to dive.

Does anyone know about the canoe rentals @ cypress spring? if the place is still there?

Dude! I just got a Flathead VI last week too. Let me know if you find and quarries or gravel pits in our area......
