Hi all,

I'm going to be in New Smyrna in October for a week. No time to drive down to Miami or Keys.

I see a bunch of sites (www.volusiareefs.org) from 5 to 15mi from the inlet. How's the diving? Is October a good/bad time? General visibility (I'm used to Keys and Caribbean)? I spent my summers on this beach, and don't recall clear water, like further south. Is this because the gulf stream swings offshore north of Jupiter? Is 10nm far enough to find better vis?

I'm checking out Sea Dogs in NSB. Anyone else I should look into?

Thanks!

NSB is not like West Palm and 3 miles to the gulf stream's clear water. It's 25 miles off shore of NSB on a good day. The biggest factor for viz is the previous 3 days wind direction and speed and also the swell height and duration which scubs the bottom. I won't go into how to read data and get a best guess for 12-15 miles offshore (Mindanao, McAllister, site 3 stuff, etc). It takes a while to understand. Simply put, if the surfers are having a blast, don't go.

You said it best, call Sea Dogs and they will give you excellent information.
