So I went to the Big Island for 4 days last week. We spent most of the time in Volcanoes National Park and it was cooooold (never thought I'd say that, but hey, 4000 ft is 4000 ft.) I only saw flowing lava from a distance, but the dry stuff was cool too.

Also managed to visit the black sand beach which was just wild.

Lava is so diverse, I had no idea how many different shapes, colors, and types it could take on, depending on mineral content, speed, and temp. Wild stuff.

The convergence of three types of lava.

For some reason, there were lots of these little dead crabs, none touched by birds or any other kind of predator...just dead on the shore, like life just fell out of them.

Yeah, I was totally surprised at how vast it really was and every turn you took was so different. Overcast, though, kinda bummed me out.
