hey guys I'm living and working in Bali as a Course Director teaching IDC's like always, I'm still alive and the volcano is still at the same spot where it was centuries ago. I'm getting sooo many emails in from worried friends, family and worried divers. This article may help understand the whole situation a bit better. And also yes we are still diving every day.
It started on the 22nd when the national Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) raised the level of thread from level III (Siaga) to leve IV (Beware). After that the madness started and didn't stop until 2 days ago as we are all living with it and it can happen that the Level 4 status remains for years as there is no way to measure when it really happens.
However the critical areas around Agung are 9-12 KM around the crater which also involves two dive destinations, Tulamben with the world famous Liberty Wreck and Amed with it's teaming marine life. Now a days they are ghost towns as most of the locals and all tourists have left and found shelter in the southern parts.
Most of them found support in Sanur where they have shelter and get great response from the community local and expats. The best example I have for it is this picture of my work colleague at Joe's Gone Diving, Ethel with his wife julie and their baby abby.
The main problem now is that no one knows when it erupts and as we are going into the rainy season the winds will change and if it erupts the possibility of ash clouds in the south is higher.
But also here there are Face masks and Action plans in every hotel available. The main problem again is that the poor people from the affected area don't know when they can return to their homes and business.
Otherwise for divers and travellers from and to Bali the only real three is in a case of an eruption that the airport will be close. Also there the government has action plans ready to alter the location either to Jakarta or Lombok with no further charge just in each direction a couple of hours in the bus and ferry.
So if you have booked a ticket to Bali don't be afraid the only thing you are missing out is the liberty Wreck and a few dive sites in the north the rest in the south is still amazing as always. Also the rainy season hasn't kicked in yet an we are still spotting many Sunfish and Manta Rays along with the other beautiful reef fish around south Bali, Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan.
Mola Ramsey in Crystal Bay
Manta Ray in Nusa Penida
See, the Underwater World is still stunning and the sun is still shining in Indonesias Bali.
Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts
