One of the few places in the world where you can practice Active Volcanic
Crater Diving in fresh water is ILOPANGO Volcano, located in El Salvador,
in the heart of Central America; this magnificent 8 x 11 Km lake filled caldera
erupted in the year 260 AD, considered one of the major eruptions in the
world history; make up an idea, when Krakatoa in Indonesia erupted in the
year 1883, it blasted out 18 cubic kilometers of rocks…… Ilopango blasted
out 40.

The water conditions make it perfect for diving it all year round, it has an
average temperature of 77º F, we do recommend a 1-3 mil wetsuit. Discover
all the beauties that are unexplored in this environment.

Several dive spots are available in Ilopango where you can have a close
encounter with an active crater; for instance “La Caldera del Diablo” a sunken
hill with an odd shaped bean, has depths starting at 40 feet and go down
to 400 feet, where you can find hot water outlets or vents, reaching
temperatures of 58º C; astonishing vertical walls will provide you the best
free-flying sensation you’ll ever have. You can visit as well “El Cerro Hundido”
where you can find volcanic magnesium nodules, sphere shaped structures
with a mineral composition of: Magnesic calcite (Ca,Mg)CO3 – 65%,
Cristobalite (SiO2) – 13%, Quartz (SiO2) – 11%, Plagioclase
(Ca,Na)(Si,Al)4O8 – 11%. These “growing” rocks, are the slowest geological
process in volcanic history going at a rate of 0,75 – 1,00 mm per year.

You can dive in “Los Cerros Quemados”, product of the last eruption
Ilopango made in the year 1890.

Get wet into ancient history and enjoy breathtaking landscapes along
this “Belt of Fire”; Let’s go and blow some bubbles………
