I sold my veo 100nx (actually it was my daughters) to a guy through ebay.

He sent me a mesage saying last night saying it didn't work. That it just kept scrolling through depths at 10 ft increments and he could not get it into "dive mode"

I've owned 4 Veos and 2 Prodigys and all of them went to dive mode when they were ~6 fsw. Until then they stayed in surface mode and scrolled the dive planning info. If a dive had been made the scroll included the fly timer otherwise it did not.

Am I missing something? Is there some way to force one into dive mode while on the surface?

my Veo 250 is long gone and I do not recall it acting this way however I believe the two button models stay on the "surface mode" screen until you hit one of the buttons, then it goes to the NDL scroll

May not matter but I just tested my wife's Aeris XR1-nx, which is pretty much identical to the Veo 100 other than the screen layout and it behaves just like your buyer it reporting. After powering on, it displays the surface mode screen, then after a couple seconds begins the NDL scroll up to 190 feet then repeats until it powers off again, or enters the water.

The Veo 100 manual supports this process as well (I tried to copy and paste from the oceanicww.com site but it didn't want to work) I'd refer your buyer to page 19 here http://www.oceanicworldwide.com/pdf/12-2725-r02.pdf it outlines the "Surface sequence" that he is seeing. It is simply doing what it is supposed to do.

About the only way he can actually test it is to either go diving or drop it in water deep enough to enter dive mode or bring it to a dive shop that has a test chamber.
