vaccines

Does anyone know of what vaccines I need to get before heading to CoCo view in Roatan? I was curious if any had side effects when diving or if I need them at all since CoCO View is off the mainland?

Hi Nicole,

Most travelers to Roatan that I know do not seek any vaccinations/prophylactic medication specifically for that venue. However, IMHO it is prudent to at least make sure that routine immunizations that one should be keeping up on anyway, e.g., tetanus, are current. If travel on mainland Honduras is planned, where diseases are a larger problem in some areas, then that is another story.

If one is concerned, they can consult the CDC at http://www.cdc.gov/travel/index.htm, or visist a facility or physician that specializes in travel medicine, such as those belonging to http://www.istm.org/ or http://www.astmh.org/clinics/clinindex.html. This will result in a conservative approach to the matter that should leave them well-protected & feeling secure.

3 years ago we traveled to Roatan for the first time. As a precaution we checked with our local hospitals Travel Health Clinic. They follow CDC quidelines and suggested that we get Hepatitis A vaccines, the first a month prior to travel and then a follow up 6 - 12 months later. They also prescribed anti-malaria medication which we took with no side effects. They also gave us a prescription for severe diarrhea. It was not a cheap visit, but in my opinion well worth it. We are leaving in 31 days for trip #3 again with our precriptions in hand.

Nothing is required, but . . . prevention is best in my opinion.

You received good advice. Was hepatitis C vacine mentioned, or is this not available? I believe that is what killed Jim Nabors' liver.

There is no vaccine for HEP C.
