It is amazing how fast you folks turn a thread in to a pullable thread. . . I am almost in awe at your abilities. . .

:::::: ADVISOR'S OBSERVATION ::::::

It is because of the extremely politically charged nature of the thread, especially when it comes to gun control.

Gun control, and the the legal implications thereof, need to stay out of this thread.

ScubaTexan:
Ordinarily, I would agree with you, but there is no way to talk about gun control without violating the TOS concerning political topics. I'll bring it up in The Dungeon, but don't get your hopes up.

I understand that perfectly.

I saw a video that had the gunshots recorded. Violence happens so quickly, I believe that even if all the students were carrying weapons, the outcome would have been the same. I heard about twenty shots in the space of ten seconds on the video. Even professional soldiers can be taken by surprise and killed. These were just students in a classroom listening to a lecture.

My thought is this- there isn't a way to stop shootings like this, within the realm of living in a free society. Like I said above, violence happens *so* quickly. Its not like in the movies with long prolonged shoot-outs. In ten seconds twenty people were shot. The gunman had no concern for his own safety, so that even further reduces any possibility of stopping something like this.

The only way to remedy something like this is to prevent it from happening. I'm not talking about gun control. I'm talking about reporting unstable individuals who make claims of violence or threats to the police.

I'll just say that I prefer that individual citizens make the choice rather than a politician who most likely will not be there when something happens & leave it at that, given the TOS concerns for this site.

OH-JJ:
Oh and Global Warming is a political Discussion, too. ;)
very true, good point

I would be interested in finding out if the shooter was connected to the bomb threats that were made to the engineering department at VT last week.

You heard wrong... There were only about 5-10 shots fired in that clip. what you were counting were the echos.

Oh this took place over a period of over two hours. not the five minute clip you saw. remember 32 dead 20 some wounded, not including the shooter who shot himself.

ETA: They just replayed the clip. There were 8 shots heard.

DavidPT40:
It was two seperate shootings, the first killed two people. I believe the police thought the killer had fled. Those two people died at the hospital. The next shooting all happened in one classroom.

The news is saying several class rooms.... I know from my college days, most of the Engineering classes are smaller than average.

However This is not the movies. you cannot shoot 50 some people in less than five minutes. i.e. There was more than enough time for someone if they were armed, to stop this guy.
