So Im guessing im an idiot......there is what looks like 3 buttons on the top but they don't press....its not the 3 silver ones is it???

they look like buttons on the top but however do nothing.....there oval and the same color as the body of the computer...(blue)

Just checking the manual and it states;

The display of Smart Z can be illuminated both on the surfaceand underwater.The backlight can be activated by pressing on top of the case.The light will turn off automatically after 8 seconds or after thetime selected via SmartTRAK.The backlight can only be activated if the computer display ison.

Try pressing the case just above the display in an area between thye 2nd and 3rd buttons.
Remember the backlight may be hard to see in a bright room or sunne beach.

They're technically not buttons - just raised contacts. Notice there's actually 4 of them - one below the screen to the right - usually bridging two with your fingers activates any function.

They all do different functions depending on the mode you're in also so if you don't have one - here's a link to the manual: http://www.scubapro.com/media/176992/smart-all-manuals-eng.pdf

All functions use the bottom contact and one other typically. On land lick your fingertips first also - it will work better.

It's not very bright - just a dim light source near the top. As the above poster mentioned, play with it in a dark room or you won't be able to tell. I actually would shine my flashlight on it at night instead to be able to see it.

The computer itself should activate when submerged for some interval at some shallow depth when the contacts are wet but I don't recall what either were. If it's dry between dives it shuts off after 3 minutes - I remember that.

Computer activation is immediate when contacts are wet.

the backlight is not controlled by the contacts. the backlight is activated by firmly squeezing the case.

i place my index finger between and slightly above the center and right contact and my thumb in the center below the screen. a VERY firm squeeze will trigger the backlight. i do not touch the contacts.

if you are not wearing the computer, you can also trigger the light by squeezing the computer with your thumb on the lcd and index finger on the back of the computer.

There is no "light switch". my guess is that the light is activated by sudden pressure changes caused by squeezing the case.

P.S. I forgot to mention that the computer MUST already be "turned on" before you can activate the light. Turning the computer on requires that you short the B & E contacts.
