I am an amateur underwater photographer and also really confused.
Which is the best standard class liveaboard in Thailand that caters to the needs of underwater photographers?(provides diveguides, sufficient time underwater without buddy problems etc)
Also is there any liveaboard that provides good underwater workshops to improve photoskills for experienced photographers?
thanks:)

Mermaid liveaboards is the best i have been on. I have been on the mermaid 1 and 2 both are very good boats. You could arrange with mermaid to get jez tryner to do a course on the boat with yourself. I believe he still works on the mermaid 2 as a diveguide.

Most liveaboards in Thailand are standard-class. Mermaid is one of the higher end options. I've been on both Mermaid boats as a regular dive customer, and they are really no different in terms of attention to photographers than any other boat. My advice would be to go with a somewhat less expensive boat and spend the savings on hiring a private dive guide. This person will not only serve as a spotter for you, but also will liberate you from having to dive with a group or wait around for other photographers in the group to shoot.

If you'd like additional information from somebody on the ground here in Thailand, just shoot me a PM.
