So, I went diving yesterday at our local lake and stopped by the LDS yesterday. I wanted to say hi to the owner and just see what was going on. He was filling another guy's tanks and talking about Cozumel and I joined in the conversation. I asked if he had any Spare Air kits in stock and he said he ordered them 2 at a time but was out at the time. The other customer said he had a buddy that passed away a some time back while doing what he loved, coaching soccer, and that he had gotten all of his buddy's dive gear. He had his Spare Air (3.0 cf) and it was almost like new and he would sell it to me for $100. As you know, these go for $249-299. He even offerred to go home (30 minute drive) get his Harley and the spare air and drive back to the lake to give it to me! The LDS owner was glad it worked out for both of us.

Then I asked if the LDS had a couple of items which he didn't have and I told him I needed another bottle of SPIT. I asked him if I could replace the skirt on my Scubapro Clear Vu mask with purge valve as it has gotten cloudy. He said no and told me to clean it with Dawn and water and it would look like new. He mentioned the new Clear Vu Plus masks with purge and said they were awesome. It felt really good when I tried it on and I asked how much while thinking $100 was my purchase point and he said $89 so I bought one. Well, today I look online and they go for as low as $40, + shipping but no tax, on line. WHAT? He charged me more than double! So, I ask myself if it was worth the extra $45? Absolutely. He filled my tank for $5, I got to enjoy the always wonderful experience of browsing the shop and meeting folks, talking about trips and music and life in general. I made a new friend and maybe future dive / trip buddy. Shoot, $100 would have still been a bargain. I would do it again even for a wetsuit that I may pay $100 more than I would online. I want to have that dive shop there for us to visit in the future and am willing to help him do so.

Diving is interesting for an almost infinite number of reasons, one of which is that while it can be a very solitary and self reliant undertaking, it is also one of the most social activities I have ever done! Real, human, face to face relationships... can't get that from a damned computer.

Ok I have to admit that by the way you put this I do have to tell a little bit about my experience at my LDS. For respect to him and my collegues in the Tulsa area I wont mention names or dollar amounts. My LDS of choice is one that for some time has been the target of heated debate as well as a dive group I am involved in. Between the two there does appear to be some bad blood with the two of them but thats their buisness as to why. Anyway because of this bad blood and a handful of bad experiences (Hey they happen right no one has a 100 percent satisfaction rate.) My LDS catches a lot of negativity. Again I am not going to get between what one person feels is right and another feels is wrong)

Anyway he like a lot of dive shops nationwide are caught up in fight for survival as the internet has done harm to his buisness slightly as well. He does back what he sales though and does believe in them whole heartedly.

I have taken all but 2 courses with him so far and found his staff to be like family. Yes there are times me and his staff may have a disagreement of ideas and yes I am sure they have ideas of me sometimes not positive. (Everyone has a diffrent opinion of someone when they are not around whether serious or just out of fun) But we all know what we love and we all know what we want to achieve. I dont mind at all that sometimes an opinion may be lower of me then my expectations and I love it to pieces when they have a high opinion of me. Hey its life.

Now again being that we live in free market I understand he sometimes is not the cheapest man in the world and then I understand sometimes he just may be. I wont say prices of what it cost because its not my intent to start a flame war of prices but people localy know what he charges for his courses.

I told some people what he charged me for classes and they like to died. Others have said it was a good price. My point is as you stated it was worth it to me.

People wonder why I am so loyal to my dive shop and Im going to post it here.

When I went to Hawaii back in 2007 there were 2 absolutes in my life. One was I could not swim and the other was that I loved the ocean. I can never vacation without the ocean and this stems back to a love instilled into me by my now deceased wife.

Anyway while in Hawaii there was a swimming pool at our resort where Discover Scuba was offered for free. I was hesitant but hey I loved the ocean so much I was magnitized. I could not help myself so I asked if I had to be a swimmer. The reply was "Padi does not require swimming skills for the discover scuba" Well I should have caught that first sentence but hey I was thinking "OCEAN!!!" So I did the course and was hooked. I then came home and asked around not knowing how this whole thing worked and found I had to be a swimmer to pass the swim test and float test. Uggghhhhh.

Well I signed up with my shop and paid in full then realized uh oh I forgot about that part. I called the shop back and found that he was as subborn as I was. He said "come in and Ill show you some tricks to the trade" He spent his time in the pool with me and actually taught me how to float. He even took it a step further by taking time away from his busy counter and things he had to do so he could get in the pool with me for no charge what so ever and help me reach my passion.

When I recently took divemaster with him I realized all those years since he taught me to swim I still was no power swimmer but again taking the basic skills he taught me I put them together and passed the swim assesment based on what he taught me.

So when people ask me why I stick with him my reply is simple "Yes I paid x amount more then LDS X but his time in the pool and his belief in me when my own belief faded is worth far more then my savings. Yes I could go to this place but he spent his own time at no charge to teach me to swim. Thats something you cant put a price tag on.

Yes I am guilty of saving money online and when its substantial I dont have a choice as my money is not unlimited. But when it comes to courses he has my loyalty and when it comes to a brand I want that he carries he gets the first shot to at least come close enough to where I can afford it. His clientel is divided as any shops are. Some will walk away and never come back. Others will always be there for him and I am one of those.

Welcome to the modern world.

I have an app on my Iphone called "Bar Code Scanner". With it I can find an internet price within seconds. With the Amazon bar code scanner I can find it buy it off my favorite place to purchase from in seconds. The world is changing...those that resist change will fail.

Having excellent return policies like LP does we can order 3-4 wetsuits, try them all on in the comfort of our home, and ship the ones that don't fit back, with no more hassle than talking to a store employee to ask to unlock the dressing room doors.

My LDS's have pretty much nothing I need, nor want. One LDS is about a mile from me. Their lack of offering nitrox caused me to purchase my own compressor. Most of my shopping is done online these days for cost savings, and many more options of brands and models.

Are you proposing that each diver purchases his own compressor and does his business online for purchases and training?

Hey, you guys need to know about this...

I went out to a restaurant to eat this weekend, it was nice, good food, good service, really nice atmosphere, ordered up some tasty appetisers, and I ordered a bottle of Syrah, had a nice main course, skipped dessert though, man I was on the brink of a food coma. We had a nice night, left and didn't think much of it.

But today I was in a local liquor store and I saw the same bottle of wine that I had at the restaurant. It was selling in the liqour store for $26.00. Now here is where it gets good, listen to this... the restaurant charged me $52.00 for the exact same bottle of wine!!!!! HOLY CRAP!

What do you guys think I should do? I'm outraged! I'm thinking about standing outside the restaurant and telling all the newbies going in there what a rip off place this is, to not buy any wine there because you can get it cheaper if you drive to the liqour store and buy it. AND now help me with this one, I wonder if the liqour store had it for $26.00, what could I buy it for online?

Man I feel like such a chump I was so taken advantage of by this restaurant!!!!!!!!

Why would you buy wine to go with dinner? You don't need wine, drink water. Wine is an accessory, totally unnecessary. If you think you need wine don't spend more than $10. Anybody who spends more than $10 for a bottle of wine is an idiot. I would never spend more than $10 for a bottle of wine.
:rofl3::rofl3::rofl3:

Now that you learned your lesson :) , you should order your food online and cook it yourself. What about buying your steak online and take it to this restaurant to cook it for you??

I bet if you total up the cost of the food you ate at the local super market vs the restaurant you would find at least a 100% markup, if not more. I can feed the family a really nice steak dinner (4 adults) for the same price as a steak dinner out. On top of the the amount of fat and sugar consumed at home on the same dinner is a lot less....

So, maybe we should eat all our meals out and support our local restaurants. If we don't were will we eat?

Sorry guys but I am going to fall in the category of rude prick. If I see a wetsuit and try it on, but the shop gives me the hard sell, I am less inclined to purchase even if he is going to come within a percent of the online price. I honestly do not care about them trying to run a small business because I know for a fact they honestly do not care about me.

You spent $52 for a bottle of wine, no special occasion, and somehow you think divers should listen to your advise on purchasing scuba gear!!!!

This analogy is inapt because most people go to restaurants for the experience as well as the food and beverages, whereas most people go to a dive shop just for the gear, and would be happy to take it in the most efficient way it can be delivered. On the other hand, if you do go to a dive shop for the experience--the camaraderie, the ambience, the coffee, the pool, or the handy little tips from the owner--then the analogy is instructive, and you should continue to pay the markup happily, as you would (and I do) in a fine restaurant.
