thanks Tobin. As always, you bless us not just with good advice, but as well with a complete thought process, perspective, context and the opportunity to better the way we think.

My meager 100+ dives have been with a jacket BC and wanting now to try a BP+Wing, I shall follow your advice and make the optimal choices.

Tobin, is there an STA on the DSS website that one needs to pair with the DSS Backplates?

No DSS STAs. Our single rigs do not require a STA. One of the key elements in our system is the ability to quickly and easily remove the wing from the plate. This reduces the chances that the plate will get dropped on the wing. Dropping 5-6 lbs of hard edged backplate edgewise on a wing is the leading cause of pinched bladders.

We do have several videos on the DSS site that details how our system goes together and how secure it is.

Most folks that use a STA will leave their wing bolted to their plate via the STA and we want to avoid that.

Take a look at the video's and let me know if you have other questions.

Can you do this? If you have a doubles wing on a BP can you use it for a single?

I would simply type "no" but SB requires at least 5 characters to post.

Of course, you CAN use a doubles wing on a single tank. And you CAN use a drinking straw for a snorkel and swim goggles instead of a mask. But you're really not gonna like the way it works out.

There are some "hybrid" type wings like the Dive Rite Rec wing that can do both but it is only good for smaller steel tanks, and is a bit wide for singles, but does better on small doubles than it does on singles.

Any product designed to do TWO things... typically does NEITHER very well.

Forget the taco effect if it is a bungeed wing.

I have used a wtx4 doubles wing for years as a singles wing however it was the only one available when I bought it. Apeks didnt make a singles wing with more than 30 lbs of lift at the time. Now I am thinking about getting a dedicated singles wing but I havent seen the need.

RJP I agree, but the rec wing does do very well on small doubles, LP72's, AL80's, LP45/50's, etc. and does pretty darn good on heavy 8" singles, lp104, HP130 etc, might be a little bit, but it isn't obscenely large. That said, I have a 20lb travel wing for singles that almost never gets used, just dive without half the time, and dedicated doubles wings.

You are so far behind the times. And as I would prefer not to even engage in this debate I will say that I have had over 4 BCs and the OMS Tresseract wing will pretty much do it all. I have dived it with single a 80, 100, 120, double 104's and double 120's. In the past everyone was against bungee wings but look at today'a BC's mainly side mounters. OBTW, Hate replies are not helpful.

Spin the dump valve off one of those bungee'd wings and watch what happens.

Do the same thing with a non-bungeed wing and it wont hardly even lose any gas.

Okay scubaboard doesn't want me to reply. I had a "wait what?" moment when reading this

Could you explain?

I want to ask why?? Since this is in technical diving forum, I assume OP is a tech diver. The cost of a single wing is peanuts in the world of technical diving. Gas of some dive can cost as much as 2nd hand wing. So why not just buy the proper gear for the proper dive?

Pretty sure there isn't an entrance examine one needs to pass to post in this forum. Kudo's to the OP for asking before he purchased. We all started building our knowledge base somewhere…...
