Doc Ed:
Thanks everyone! I kinda like the thought of diving something that's proven to be reliable.
On another note, have any of you ever tried getting your old regs replated? doesn't it change the tolerances on the threads?
I've seen a lot of regs replated or powdercoated. You might contact this gentleman, who does some rechroming of vintage doublehose regs:

Here's an example of powdercoating recently done:

Thanks for the link! I checked out the site. Sweeeeeeeeet!!! My question now is: doesn't powder coat scratch easily? I like the cosmetic effect, but will it hold up just as well as chrome underwater?

From what I understand, yes. They powdercoat motorcycle parts(especially frames) for just that reason. I think the only scratches you are likely to see(unless you whack it against cave walls on a regular basis) are small scratches that will buff right out. Then again, I don't have any powdercoated regs, so YMMV.

So since a few knowledgeable folks on the Pro Diver seem to be here, anyone ever convert one to DIN? With the similarities to the Titan, it seems like it should be somthing I could do, but guidance from the masses would be very helpful. The LDS rents mainly DIN, and I'd hat to have to buy a new reg just so I could dive steel tanks. Any thoughts?

NWbrewer: Well, I'm not too sure if that would work. The high pressure module in the pro diver incorporates the inlet boss, the high pressure crown, and also acts as a yoke retainer, so unlike the titan, it doen't have external threads on the HP side that you can attatch a DIN adapter. Then again, there just might be something out there.... Anyone?

Creed: yeah, I guess you're right. My concepts of powder coating have been influenced by watching too much American Chopper on TV, where it seems they're very very careful with the way they handle their bikes.

Powder coating is starting to look like a good option!

Stick with chrome, powdercoat is an electrostatic paint. It is considered desirable because of the smooth finish but it is not as tough as chrome.

Yeah, it sorta dawned on me too that I've never seen anyone throw a powder coated bike into the sea.

But it would've looked nice, though.

Oh well.

I was just passing on an observation. I've seen a lot of people doing it recently, on doublehose regs. Chrome is by far tougher, but also by far a lot more expensive, from what I know. Of course, I haven't done either, and tend to find a worn chrome finish, with brass peeking out, to have a tough, "seen it all" sort of charm all its own. As long as it's not flaking chrome on the inside, I just ignore it.

Heehee! I like this point of view. :D

Hmmm, my reg had some spotting on the inside, but no flakes. It got dunked (i'm sure more than once) before I became its owner. The pin is actually galvanized to the HP seat! Otherwise, the crown is fine - albeit stripped of chrome. I wonder if there's a way around this?
