Would any of you folks know where one could take the USCG Boating course (or whatever it is called). I am trying to convince my wife that we need to aquire a boat sometime while we are here (maybe within the next year or so).

I googled USCG Hawaii and couldn't find any relevant information--so any contact information/resources would be appreciated.

Thanks

PS: I wonder if they explain the difference between a gaff and a boat hook in the course, maybe Jimbo can take it with me

Actually the Coast Guard Auxiliary runs the courses on boating safety, not the Coast Guard (yeah I know splitting hairs). The US Power Squadren runs one as well, both are very good courses. I have taken them both over the years, I had a summer job of running a launch (water taxi) for a couple of clubs in New Hampshire when I was a kid (I so miss that summer job).

You can get the info you need from these web sites.

PS: a Gaff is used in fishing usually big and pointy, a boat hook is used to handle lines and is small and blunt.

I would start with the state Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Since it doesn’t appear the United States Power Squadron has any squadrons in your area, you probably can check at the nearest West Marine, Boaters World, Boat US, or whatever large boating supply store is around and many of them also conduct safety courses.

Kaneohe (sp) Marine Corps Base also offers classes so you can then rent there boats if you have military privliges. You had mentioned USAA so I asume you do.

I need that class too...your boat insurance is less with that.

Some insurance companies will give you a discount just for completing the Boat US online course.

ooooohhhh, really? you are a wealth of information. What else are you holding out on me? I will ask Navy Fed.
