I am sure that this has already been addressed, but a timely update is warranted. On July 13 the cost of a new US passport application or renewal will increase by $35. You still have plenty of time to beat the deadline.

I guess they want us to stay home and boost the US economy.

By the way, does anyone know if they let us keep the visa stamp pages from our existing passports after we renew? I'd hate to lose them since I do need to renew mine this year.

Yes, Bill, you get to keep your old passport.

Oh Gosh, $850.00 to the resort for a week of lodging and diving; $650.00 to the airline for the international flight to the Caribbean, $450.00 for meals and drinks for the week, $200.00 for souveniers and trinkets and multiply that X2 as the wife is dive buddy and will not be left at home............with this additional $35 cost for the passport (1X every 10yrs) I don't know how I will be able to make ends meet.

In the big scheme, it's not a deal breaker. Can you think of a good reason to send the money to Washington rather than spending in on your vacation?

You bet, on this founding day when our government has such great need, it seems our duty as good citizens to fund to the fullest extent possible the needs of our hardworking congressmen who are in Washington working tirelessly for our benefit and welfare:rofl3::rofl3:

Certainly an additional $35 (distributed over the lifetime of a passport) is only a trivial additional cost. I wonder how much of the increase has to do with their need to track vicious terrorists? I Know I get stopped with some frequency when I am carrying my underwater housing.

guess i need to renew mine then PDQ. Not planning to travel anytime soon, but needs to be done anyway

Yes, Bill, you get to keep your old passport.

That's true, they do send it back to you intact by separate mail, for you to store away as a keepsake. The new passport will come squeaky clean with all virgin pages, so you will look like a neophyte traveler once again. Time to get busy and break that new one in properly! Oh, by the way, that new passport has a few new features, like imbedded electronic chip technology to help speed processing at airports and such, and increased protection against unauthorized scanning, etc. See? Your government is always working to improve your general lot in life. Woody

Well at least this reasonably mild increase is generally elective for those who wish to travel abroad (or to Canada and Mexico now). No one is forcing us to get one... but I'll be sure to renew mine soon (yep, I procrastinated long enough to have to pay the increase). And we actually get a tangible benefit from having a passport... if we still have the money to travel!
