My last day in the pool during my training my stomach became upset. I surfaced and had to sit the rest of the session. I just did my first opened dive to become certified and while I was at the bottom, 30 foot, my stomach again became upset. I did make it to the surface. I waited 2 hours until I felt that I could go back to do the 2nd dive and after I got all the gear on I felt sick again. Has anyone experienced this before?

Xaler. Try calming the nerves down. If that doesn't work see a doc.

Also, how tight is your suit?

It sounds like it might be nerves. It gets a lot easier as time goes on. Or, are you swallowing water at all? I've had a nasty upset stomach at 35 feet deep before, but that was because shortly before descending I took a wave in the face and swallowed sea water. After a few minutes of diving I puked through my reg and felt great after that, and continued the dive.

I've had students get motion sickness underwater (usually when we are crossing sand or surf grass when there there is really nothing to focus on). If they take Bonine or Triptone before the dive they are okay.

...or is it acid reflux?

The body (and digestive tract) gets kinda funny when you invert it.

We're you diving on an empty stomach? That could be a problem too. I did have the same experience as Baconated while diving in the Keys. I almost sat out the afternoon dives. But after I ate a light lunch I felt much better and had awesome afternoon dives.

You didn't have this on the first days? Only the last? Maybe it was just something you ate. Avoid hotdogs with fried onions and tomatos...I get bad heartburn free diving if I eat that. Peanut butter and banana sandwiches and water is better.

These days I take TUMs before I dive after some bad experiences with heartburn from eating bananas on a surface interval and acid reflux down at 80 feet from pepper sauce.

Chewable Tums are your friend.

Pepcid goes a long way! I always get an "apprehensive" stomach before either the first dive of the year, or first dive of a vacation etc...just nervous excitement! I take a Pepcid and it helps!

Welcome to SB! You'll find a lot of good info here!

I was fine the first 3 days of the confind pool dives. It was the last day. There was a swim team practicing and alot of waves. Yesterday it was the first dive of the open water certification dives. The water was relatively calm, but we spent a few minutes on the top waiting for the instructor to tie off the line. He nor the Dive Master have had this happen to any students. It could be motion sickness.
