When we were at LCBR in November, we saw that the free-standing gift shop building - next door to the main entrance and lobby - had been closed and the dive shop had the only gift shop on site.

I just saw this comment on Trip Advisor that was posted by LCBR management in response to a (mostly positive) review. It describes some upcoming changes to the lobby and dining areas. The free-standing building they mention is probably the old gift shop.

"...We are continuing to work on our menu to ensure our meals remain one of the many highlights of visits. And beginning soon, we will be remodeling our dining room - expanding it into the current lobby and screened porch after we open the new lobby in the free-standing building out front. We will also be adding a new, screened outdoor dining area behind the bar so there is plenty of room for everyone (since all our guests tend to shop up for meals when the bell rings) at one time..."

The indoor dining area was starting to show it's age. Nothing terrible but looking dated. Glad they are working on the menu as well. IMO, over the past few years, the chef (s) seem to have been trying to impress with an overabundance of seasonings and fancy names for dishes rather than making sure the food was not over cooked or over seasoned. I hope they don't change the Friday night BBQ and maybe add a few other Cayman style dishes on the other nights.

I really should not be complaining; doing a buffet in the middle of nowhere can't be easy.

Its not an unfair comment. Le Soleild'Or on The Brac won all sorts of awards up against the best of the best in GC which is some pretty amazing company to be in. Their young bartender won the highest award given a couple of years ago for her incredible offering made with locally sourced ingredients. There are so many flights going over that it is possible to source first class and a wide variety of ingredients. BBQ is not rocket science and going local is a brilliant idea. Maybe you should send them a note :)

There is a huge price differential between Soleil D'or and LCBR.
Also, getting fresh food to Brac is easier than to LC.

My understanding is that Le Soleil d'Or has closed down. The suites may still be available to rent but I don't think that the restaurants are open - unless they've reopened? They grew a lot of their own vegetables and were offering a farm to table menu, so they didn't have to import as many goods.

I don't know. Some friends were raving about the place a few years ago but when I checked the prices, it scared me off.

It did close but because of issues that were not related to the business itself. While they don’t have to bring in high end there are other options :) I have friends who live in LC and meals at their house are wonderful and they are just a private family.

A private home isn't serving 100 people who all want to eat at 6.30 PM. The food at LCBR isn't bad, I'm just saying that they could do better even with their existing products.
Their previous chef seemed to be better than the current one even though the menu remains the same.
