AFTER nearly two years, justice has been served to the 13 Vietnamese poachers caught red-handed with the corpses of 101 endangered Hawksbill Turtles near El Nido, Northern Palawan in August of 2008. Branch 50 of the Regional Trial Court of Puerto Princesa meted the Vietnamese imprisonment of up to six months and fines of approximately P4.5 million each for violating Section 87 of the Fisheries Code (Republic Act or RA 8550).
The court also ordered imprisonment of up to six months and fines of approximately P120,000 each for violating Section 97 of the Fisheries Code (RA 8550) and up to 18 months imprisonment and fines of approximately P15,000 each for Section 27 of the Wildlife Act (RA 9147).
However, since the poachers have been detained in Puerto Princesa since September 2008, the court ruled that only the fines remain to be served.
