    Hello everyone!

My name is Alexander and I need your help by filling out my survey. I am studying Product Design Engineering at the university of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

I have a project to do throughout the year and my chosen topic is to improve the aspect of water leakage in the scuba mask, either by eliminating it completely or to eliminate the irritating factors after water enters the mask.

There are only four simple questions which should only take a minute or so and it is completely anonymous.

Mask problems while SCUBA diving Survey

Thank you everyone and I will keep you updated with the progress.

Done but I am puzzled how those questions will result in meaningful data.

Ditto. He has already decided to do it, apparently regardless of whether Q3 indicates it is needed or not. Q4 is relevant to his design criteria, but Q2 is not. Q1 gives some possible insight into which segment of the community might be target for a product. It does seem like the classic equipment solution to a skills problem.

Q2- not sure if you were asking who I received training from? You can’t exactly “belong” to organizations like TDI and IANTD

Yes, I'm interested in how the answers to these questions will lead to a better mask design.

Thank you for the help everyone. I understand the questions seems a bit vague but here was my idea behind the survey.

In the end of the project I should have a functional prototype and if it is actually leakproof/watertight there is no need for doing the mask removal skills anymore (hypothetical dream).

Q1: From this I will recieve an idea of which level of divers I should ask for critique when I have my concepts.

Q2: If the end result is as good as I hope, I will have to contact training organisations and ask them if it is okay with them to start using the product during the courses.

Q3: This question serves 2 purposes. 1: It provides the information of what area I should try to improve if I can't make everything completely water tight. 2: I spent the wole summer trying to find a number of how many people experience the problem but could not find it. after this survey I can say more or less how many % of divers either has experienced it or still does.

Q4: As you know this shows me what people prefer and I will try to deliver.

I hope this clarify things and if you want me to I can upload the results when they are complete

I will also conduct interviews to complement the survey.

    Hello everyone!

Sorry for doing this so late but at least, here is the result from the survey.
    http://www.surveymonkey.com/stories/SM-VRRQXFF/

I do have quite a few concepts I am making quick prototypes of that later will be shown to divers to give me feedback on what they like/dislike with each of them.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

I think this is a REALLY bad idea. You are potentially putting student in jeopardy....assuming any mask is 100% leakproof/waterproof is naive.

    Thank you for your feedback.

As I wrote at the end of the paragraph the full water tightness is a hypothetical dream. As with any design project, the aim is to create the best solution possible but later during the process you become limited by certain specifications. During the project I am the only one who will test the prototypes in water.

In the end of the project I might have a product that is just slightly better than other masks available but then ofcourse the mask removal skills are still needed. I have thought of concepts that would be fully waterproof but would be too expensive for the average recreational diver.
