and charging for the second. Is this real? Unless you are an elite or what ever member only 1 free bag and the second is 25 bucks? Anyone else hear about this? Starts May 1 or something?

Read an article about it. Seems the other airlines are watching to see how it works out. I won't book with them on purpose that's for sure!

I just flew with them to LA. The employees are warning people about it. They also charge $49 to sit in an emergency row seat!!!

I'm totally PO'd with them. I called and made sure I had aisle seats for both my flights with them, but at the airport, I found I had window seats. And the wouldn't change me, even though I explained that I have panic attacks because I'm extremely claustrophobic.

Then, we had mechanical problems out of Dulles, sat for 2 hours while they fixed the problem. Then, another half hour while they loaded 6 more passengers. We wound up missing our flight to Fiji with Air Pacific. They didn't have another flight out for 48 hours and we'd be on standby for that.

Miserable experience. I won't be flying with them again soon.

well it looks like a full boycott of United is called for and it looks like I will be driving 5 hours to Denver to fly anyone not united......... (they are the only year round carrier inot our town)

I'm reasonably sure that the charge isn't specifically for "an emergency row seat", rather it is for United's "Economy Plus" seating. On most of their aircraft Economy Plus seats are the first couple of rows in coach which are set up with a bit more spacing between rows, thus giving more legroom (they may also include the exit rows on some aircraft/flights).

I won't use them, the other carriers are watching closely...I've heard on the news that Spirit has already followed suit.

Personally I'm shocked and surprised.

Of course, I've been living on the dark side of the moon for the last 4 weeks.

:search:

Charge whatever you want, just give me the damned peanuts.

Spririt is one of those "your ticket buys you a seat, everything else is extra" airlines. Still a good deal - we fly them to/from Cayman every year. Their charging for bags is not a result of United's announcement, they were doing it before. They (Spirit) were charging $10 per bag each way (for the first two, then $100 per after that), they did, however, increase the fee to $20 per bag each way (again the 1st two) on February 20. You can pre-pay online for checked bags at a 50% discount on their website which takes it back to a reasonable price - we just pre-paid $20 to check two bags for our RT LAX-GCM flights.

When doing dive trips, my wife and I each check one bag and carry on one (plus she carries an oversized "purse/tote") - Regs/computers are in one carry on and another is devoted to camera gear. We've never had a problem getting two sets of gear and clothing for a week of caribbean diving into two checked bags that meet most airlines' 50 lb weight restrictions.

YMMV

I knew about that Economy Plus. But when I asked for an emergency row seat, I was told I could pay $49. for the privledge.
:dropmouth

There's alot more to the United ridiculousness on this trip...we wound up flying to Tokyo on United in order to get a flight to Fiji. We spent about 30 hours in the air. Our luggage was left behind, locked up in Pacific Air's storage. It finally caught up with us about 48 hours later. Stuck in paradise with no clothes OR :shakehead: dive gear.
