Hello all, I am interested in underwater archaeology. I have no experience in archaeology. Lots of dive experience though. Any advice? Maybe there’s a project in need of a quick learner.
Thanks.
Bat

Send me $200.00 and an address and I will send you the complete University course on video tape and hard to get Underwater Archeology course book, everything you want to know about it in one package.

Mike

You might try contacting the US National Park Service. They had a Submerged Cultural Resources Unit which sometimes used volunteers.

In the US TX A&M leads the way for Nautical Archaeology. RI and FL have similar programs. Currently I in Alexandria, Egypt. Hopefully I'll be able to dive the archsite but school is taking priority at the moment.

There is a nice website regarding the u/w excavations off Takishima Island with some contact info; Kublai Khan's Shipwreck Project. I've been in touch with them and they have been very helpful.

Australia has nauitcal arch..y programs through their universities.

Good luck

Chris

Since you are in DC you may want to check out Maritime Archaeological and Historical Socitey or MAHS for short. Their website is Maritime Archaeological and Historical Society

I have dove locally with SHIP (Submerged Historical Inventory Project) Their website is IMH - INSTITUTE OF MARITIME HISTORY Its a lot of fun to go looking for new wrecks with them, but its strictly hands off of anything found.

Hope this helps.

Since you are in DC, in addition to the MAHS listed above, go to the Smithsonian Scientific Diving Program and see if there is any project you could volunteer for to gain some insight or experience. If nothing else, Michael will know if there is anything going on close to home. East Carolina's program is also pretty close and they might have some options. You never know until you start asking...

And as always, the AAUS is NEVER a bad place to start.
