If you are still not having fun you need to go back to the beginning. Skin-diving to the bottom of the pool and covering some distance should be a walk in the park before you even touch a regulator.
Until you feel good about this do not progress to open water. You should be able to catch the next class for more pool time and spend some independent time working on skin diving. From what you describe your watermanship, let alone your diving is not what it needs to be for open water.
I'm not saying that you and scuba are not meant for each other but different people acclimate and adapt at different rates.
