2nd Stage

.... and the octo is the secondary air source that gets passed off in case of a OOA emergency? Do most divers typically have a cheap octo or one that is just as good as their primary air source? thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

I agree with the other post. My life is worth a quality octupus. Like the other poster my second stage gets handed to the OOA diver and I use the the combination inflater/octopus (Atomic SS1) which breathes as easily as my Atmic B2 second stage.

Most sets are sold with a detuned or lower performance regulator for the donated regulator, or octopus regulator. Think about it, though -- When would you hand it off to the other diver? When he or she is out of gas or about to be so, and is stressed and frightened. Do you want such a person to put something in their mouth that is hard to breathe? Work of breathing is one of the things that causes increased CO2 and increased anxiety.

Like so many other people here, I donate the reg I am breathing, because I know it works and I know precisely where it is. As a result, I have the exact same reg as my backup, because I get to breathe that one :)
