Hi.

I have an upcoming trip to Cocos with this outfit and they apparently don't offer DIN valves, except if I want a 15L tank, which seems very excessive and cumbersome.

They say they have "adapters that change a yoke valve to a DIN valve". I haven't heard of this before and I can't find one on Google search. I have heard of an adapter for the 1st stage but not for the valve. Has anyone gone out with these guys who can enlighten me?

Reason for asking is I'm wondering how this adapter would fit together. I wonder if it would cause the first stage to stick out and bang on the back of my head. Not my idea of fun.

There is no such thing. There are convertible Pro valves that have an insert that when inserted makes it a yoke & when removed makes it a 200 bar DIN. Maybe that is what they mean? Those are very common, at least here in the US. The vast majority of DIN tanks in the US have these convertible valves.

There ARE adapters to convert your DIN reg into a yoke. Those do cause the 1st stage to stick out pretty far and will bang you in the head. They work but really do suck in actual use.

They are certainly talking about using DIN to Yoke adaptor on the regulator - to convert the DIN Reg to work with a Yoke valve.

Those posted above work pretty well. They have 2 drawbacks:
1) weight - traveling requires to keep inside the allowance
2) dimension - first stage thread is not inside the valve on the bottle, but inside the adapter that is the first stage will stick out a bit more.

In one travel, where I had the same problem (e.g. no DIN valve) I bought an INT attachmant for my first stage and exchanged it converting my first stage from DIN to INT. This was very easy on my regulator (and also cheaper because the adapters are not for free ...).

Probably their valves are the convertible type, meaning they have an insert that allow (if screwed out) to insert a DIN (200bar) inside the valve and they can also connect an INT (or YOKE) if the insert is installed like in the following picture

Just get a yoke first stage for travel.

Do yourself a favor and have your reg converted to yoke. Do not use the adapters. Yes, the DIN to yoke adapters can work for a dive or two but I would never want to fool with one for an entire trip. These adapters combine the worst of both yoke and DIN and none of the good of either.

As to Pro valves with the inserts, I more often encounter them with the inserts frozen in place and if they are removed the result is often not especially pretty with corroded threads and sealing surfaces. This is why I often tell folks to purchase a yoke regulators and then purchase the OE DIN kit. Many manufactuers supply a DIN kit but none I know of supply a yoke kit though the parts can be ordered at more expense individually.

Still, it is hard to believe they have not at least a few DIN tanks about . Thing is, a lot of the resorts leave a pile of tanks on the dock for guests to shore dive and often those are grabbed for the boats as well. You can betcha they are all going to be yoke tanks.
