The new diver was probably oblivious to the uncontrolled descent. I have seen it before, but not in water that deep. He is a brave man chasing someone that deep.
 
Were the divers actually at 180'? From Dive Tank's report, it sounds like the water was 180' deep, but it's not clear that the divers made it that far down. The initial post in this thread indicates the ascent was actually from 102'. Still deep, obviously. Glad everyone is ok.

For those who don't know Ship Rock, it is a great dive site for people of all skills. From an area called the Fish Bowl it is easy to move around to the north where the Island drops to well over 200'. If the newbie was not situationally aware, it is entirely possible for him/her to go over to a buttress and keep following it down. Very good news about the diver sent to the Chamber.
