Some may say Im crazy but I use 100% vinegar heated in the microwave until it is really hot but not boiling(no ultra sonic, just a soak). All metal reg parts go in for a soak for about 10 to 15 minutes and they come out like brand new. Then all the parts get a hot water scrub with a toothbrush and dish soap. The only time I have lost some chrome plating is when I have had to use a dremel to polish up the area where a piston oring rides but am a bit more liberal with christolube in that area. I had bought some used regs on ebay that were green at every joint and they are still looking good inside and out so I do believe that somehow it gets neutralized with vinrgar.
