Got back from the UK about a month ago, the country seemed to go way back on diving and is very proud of it. The only thing I cannot understand about the UK dive community is why so many people smoke..... isn't that a bit suicidal?

About 30% of the general UK population smoke and I would guess that figure should be reflected in the diving population but my experience is that very few UK divers smoke. My club has around 60 members and I couldn't name a single smoker amongst them. I've just come back from a course with divers from a wide range of clubs. None of them smoked. I guess you've just met up with a few smokers. Smoking is, in my experience, not common amongst UK divers.

Cheers

Steve

Living in a country with no attempet at gun control

UK is not bad most people can't afford to smoke.
I live in Indiana loads of smokers here, Blue springs last week I had to move someones smokes lighter towel and shoes off the steps of the exit, so this guy smokes and is so wrapped up in himself he could not think anyone else wanted to use the platform and he could not wait for a smoke ??? go figure

I live in the UK and yes smoking is an issue, not just in diving but in the population in general.

Id LOVE to see us adopt with Eire has and ban smoking in all public places including pubs and bars.

Ive seen some divers smoke 2 or 3 immediately prior to a dive (we're talking minutes here) and various other things.

Id also love to see the already high tax increased 10 fold to attempt to price smoking out of the marketplace.

On the continent the % of the population smoking is even higher, italy, greece, spain etc i guess is well over 50%.

Out of 60 members in our club id guess about 15 smoke regulary.

Where did you dive in the UK? What were the dives like ?

Sorry that post was aimed at the original poster not you, thanks for telling me though :)

(fwiw im in wales but never dived angelsy as its way too far - i dive pembroke in the main).

Personally im very happy living in a country with tight gun control. I dont have to worry as much about random deranged people going beserk with a firearm, domestic arguments dont end up with someone getting shot and so on. Since the tightening up came in the police stats have shown a decrease in firearm crime and a decrease in assaults/killings with weapons suggesting the criminals arent just using other weapons to maim people - it seems a genuine decrease.

I still get nervous abroad when i see armed police walking the streets routinely !

(Whoops - gone WAY off topic).

shamed to say it but I'm one of those people who smoke mins before the dive and immediately after... like all other smokers I know the health risk inherent in smoking but in recreational diving it does not present any appreciable additional level of risk... I've even read on here an argument for smoking if you're a diver as it increases your tolerance to carbon monoxide... ok, that's clutching at straws I know!
