I hade a little time on my hands last week so I watched both vidios that were shot on my dives.

The first, in the BVI's, shot my first dives (alongwith the other 4 divers on the boat). The second was a year later in the T&C's where I had another 30 dives under my belt.

I was amazed at the difference! The first vidio captured me staring at my gauges, swimming upright, using my hands WAY too much and sucking down air!

While not perfect, the second set of dives showed that I was much more relaxed, swimming horizontaly and breathing more slowly.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this experience? I plan to look over the second vidio again to pick up on things I can "improve" upon.

Take the DIRF class, you will learn to HATE uw video of yourself. :) As best as I know, they (GUE) try to video all their DIRF classes to help the students actually see what they are doing wrong. It's one of the most informative or funny or embarrassing dive videos you will ever see, all depending on who is on the screen at the time. You really should see someone trying to back up for the first time.

i think it's a great sign that you can see things you could improve upon.

i've had the same experience. personally, like you, i like to think of it as things i needed to practice more rather than things I was doing wrong

the best divers never stop learning. i'd hate to see video of myself right now in ten years (huh?). but hey, if i can see all the crap i am doing now then (huh?) it means that i've gotten better!!!

I got to watch myself during the DIR-F class last year. There wasn't the time frame that you were able to experience but it definitely was helpful to see oneself on video while the instructors were providing critiques of what you were doing right and wrong or how you could make an improvement.

As an instructor, I wish I could get video of my students for that very reason. I think it would help a lot. I wonder what it would do to the cost of the course ;)

Okay, let me put my ignorance on full display, what is the DIR-F calss??
The Fundamentals of DIR (or DIR Fundamentals) is a class from Global Underwater Explorers ( aka GUE) intended to introduce the concepts and skills related to DIR diving. http://www.gue.com/classroom/dirfund.shtml

DIR stands for "Doing It Right", a somewhat "conversation-generating" diving system. Check out:

For a brief explanation of the roots of DIR.

I took the DIR-f in April of 2003 while I was still a really new diver (~40 dives). It was definitely a worthwhile experience and as you discovered the videos they take of you during the class are an invaluable learning tool.

I'm sure other instructors or shops in the area would keep there prices at that 3 yr. special of $99.00.
