When you listen to the reports from Columbus' New World exploration and hear about turtles swimming so thick that you could almost walk three miles across their backs to get to the nearest land, you realize what an incredible baseline we should really be judging their current populations by. Of course much of the early harvest and decimation had nothing to do with the U.S... it didn't even exist then.
 
Dr Bill-I heard similar reports from early explorers in Hawaii, but I assumed they were for Green Sea Turtles. Did they distinguish species in the historic accounts?
