Hi, does anyone know of any charter operaters that go to the U-107? Also, there is a U-Boat between the U-85 and the U-352, I think it's U-571? Anyone have any info on that one? Thanks!

You are most likely thinking of the U-701 as that is the only other U-boat in the remote area. The U-571 was sunk on Jan. 28, 1944 just west of Ireland.

I know that the Outer Banks Dive Center runs trips out to the U-85 weekly. Keep in mind, however that it is NOT in the Gulf Stream so the water will be pretty cold, 45-55 on the bottom. It rests about 95-105 feet

Otherwise, check out any of the charters out of Hatteras and Morehead as most run to the U-352 weekly as well. This rests at approximately 120 feet

The U-701 however sits in approximately 100 fsw, but with almost constant zero viz and ripping currents. I have heard that half the time it is practically covered. It is definitely considered a much more advanced dive.

Opps, I meant to say the U-576, which was sunk off Cape Hatteras according to the U-Boat.net website. On their map it looks like it's fairly close to U-85. I have just never heard of anyone diving it, assuming it's been found.

I have called every wear none dive the 576 and not sure why.
maybe I can get one of my charters to go and we find out .

Maybe it (U-576) has not been "found" by divers? I have searched on the web for any info on it and there is none. By looking at the uboat.net map, it sure looks like it's in a good area but who knows? I believe on the uboat.net they even give coordinates (however much they're worth) as to where it was sunk, I believe by a combination of depth charges and being rammed.

Hi Grier - it looks like you've been doing some U-boat reading this weekend. The U-boat histories are facinating stuff - when given the choice between 'real' wrecks and artificial wrecks around here (NC), I choose the 'real' ones almost every time (but I enojy the 'fake' ones too).

You might want to check out this book if you have not already:

Yup, I've been reading about U-boats, river diving and underwater archeology, great topics for an icy weekend, good therapy for cabin fever.

I've read Torpedo Junction and loved it. Did you ever read Iron Coffins, a good memoir of life on a U-boat? (I've got a pretty good dive/shipwreck library, which is a lifesaver, given my busy travel schedule. When I can't dive, I can at least read about it...)

Thanks for the tip. Like you said, I prefer the real, but I'll never turn down any kind of wreck dive. (Or reef dive, river dive, spring dive... you get the picture.)

So, are you with us when and if we dive the U-1105?

-Grier
