I think I paid $90 for a two tank boat dive with no rentals....Not sure what typical rentals cost, and you didn't mention if you needed them.

You can also do some decent shore dives for free.

Enjoy!

I'm there all the time (in fact, yesterday... )

The answers is: depends. Some options to consider:

Stay on the mainland #1: Come down to So Cal, and grab a local dive boat. They typically do 3 dives in a day at various spots around the island. Cost for these board is about $90 - 129, depending on the operator.

Stay on the mainland #2: Come down to So Cal, and grab the Catalina express to the island, and dive in the dive park. Cost for the Catalina Express is $43. Departs from Long Beach, San Pedro and even Dana Point (I think that one is a little more expensive). Its about an hour to make the crossing, and diving in the park is free. There is a place for air fills ($5) and some and two shops on the island you can rent gear from.

Stay on Mainland #3: Come down to So Cal, grab the early Catalina Express and once there, get on board one of the Catalina based dive boats to dive various spots on the island. This is not recommended - as you pay for the express to get there ($43) and then pay for the Dive boat (another $85 or so)... its silly, but people do it. Take a So Cal based dive boat. UNLESS, you're staying on the island (see below...)

Stay on Island: You can dive the park for free. You can grab an Avalon-based diveboat (I believe there are essentially two) or you can rent a boat and go exploring.

If you want additional info, let me know and I can move this thread to the So Cal room where you'll likely get more lovin from the locals who dive there all the time.

Hey all

Was thier Fri. with my buddy to dive the Valiant and Sue Jac. When we met this guy Vic who offered to take us out on his boat. Would have just been my buddy and I. We had finished our second dive and were packing up to catch the express. So we couldn't swing it. Gave us his card Vic Perez owner/operator.
Real nice guy. He said that he used to be a commercial diver.
Was talking to him about equipment to buy cause I'm a relatively new AOW diver and he sold me the BCD I was looking for 1/2 price used twice, SOLD. When we wen't to lunch he swung by his house and picked up the BC. When he came back he offered to take us out to check out a pod of piolot whales he'd spotted would have been a 1/2 hour no charge. Although it probably would have probably been longer . Should have took him up on it though. Buddy wanted to get back to beat the LA traffic. Srew it (weighing the option) traffic /whale watching. If you do talk to him tell him you got the info from the guy he sold the Sherwood Freedom too. Maybe it'll help you or me when I decide to take a charter. I do agree it's cheaper to take a dive boat off the mainland but it's nice to also take a small boat, 6 people with locals who know the Island and it's elements.
Here's the info off his business card.

$75 all day 4 dives includes tank, weights, food and best spots on the island. Vic mentioned Long Point and Rippers Cove to name a couple. I've never been but plan on in the future.
Hope this helps? Sorry if I tend to ramble ?
It's hard not to when you've been bit by the SCUBA bug.

P.S. The Valiant was an awesome dive . My first time and first wreck. Will definately have to do it again.

Ana,

I'm not very experienced in this area, having only made 2 dives there, but I saw a wreck in the park. The bottom of that wreck is just shy of 90 ft. As you enter at the stairs, it's to your right. Cool dive.

Walter once bubbled...
The Yukon may be big, but it's not a wreck. It was intentionally sank as an artifical reef.

and its in San Diego...not Catalina...

'Sad` to say (yeah right) that I´m not in my home waters... have to spend the next two weeks working and diving aboard a ship in the Sea of Cortez.

Rentals for full kit run about $50 per 24 hr. You can get them at SCUBA Luv (Catalina Ave) or CDS (Pleasure Pier and Casino Pt on weekends).

Wrinkles... the Valiant and the Sujac are true wrecks. The Pisces (glassbottom boat) in the park is too. I used to party hardy on it in the early 70`s before it went aground in a storm.

Time to board the ship.
