The outlook was not brilliant for the Chavez Ravine nine that day . . .

CONGRATS TO THE RED SOX - Clearly the better team in this series. But that 18-inning duel is really something to remember.

GREETINGS FROM ROATAN - Where we've been able to observe the Dodgers collapse on live TV . . . We're diving at Anthony's Key, having arrived Saturday afternoon. The first dive day is always a bit hectic but we muddled through. Things started off a bit grim, though, as Saturday night we had a TORRENTIAL downpour for a good 90 minutes. Really the definition of a tropical storm. But these things move through quickly and today (Sunday) was mostly sunny with an occasional shower. First dive was nothing to write home about with somewhat murky viz and a lot of particulate in the water. BUT . . . that was also the dive when ace DM/Guide John Carter lured a Large-Eyed Toadfish (aka Hairy Toadfish) out of its lair. Way cool. And the second and third dives were really quite nice with lots of good stuff to see. Looking forward to tomorrow (Monday) when hopefully we'll get to dive Mary's Place which was quite nice when we did it five years ago. In the meantime, here's the direct link to today's Daily Top 10 pix:https://kenkurtis.smugmug.com/…/ROATAN-2…/SUNDAY-OCTOBER-28/

MAIN LINK - If you want to check back each day, here's the link to the master folder. Just choose your day and you'll get that ten pix for that day: https://kenkurtis.smugmug.com/…/ROATAN-2018-DAILY-TOP-10-PIX

COOL TURTLE - We also had a very cool and inquisitive turtle visit us on the second dive and fortunately, I had my GoPro with me. Take a peek (90 seconds) as he checks us all out: https://youtu.be/DkqpL6pRCYs .

ZEAGLE INFLATOR RECALL - Although we didn't sell any of these units, we are a Zeagle dealer and want to make sure we get the word out about this recall. Check it out to see if your Zeagle inflator is affected: https://www.zeagle.com/sport-bcd-inflator-recall .

NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER WILL BE LATE - I had hoped to have it done before we left, then I thought that maybe I can write it while I'm down here, but there's just no way. Too much going on. (Besides, I'm entitled to a vacation too.) So look for your November newsletter sometime around November 6. (Hmmm, seems to me there's something else going on that day . . . )

NORCAL KELP IS DISAPPEARING - Thanks to Jill Gefen for turning us on to an article in the New York Times about the problems of kelp in Northern California. It's a great example of how everything in the ocean - and the planet for that matter - is inter-connected. Sea stars are affected by a mysterious disease, the urchins they keep in check have a population explosion, they in turn eat the kelp, and 93% of it is gone. No telling yet what fish life that chases away and how that will further affect things as well. Interesting (and somewhat depressing) read: https://www.nytimes.com/…/kelp-climate-change-california.ht… .

CAN'T END ON A DOWNER - Gotta leave you smiling and the aforementioned Toadfish will likely do it.

And that'll do it for now. Have a great week and let's go diving when I'm back from Roatan!!!

- Ken

The issue with kelp in northern California and the Pacific NW is a repeat of what happened during the previous appearance of The Blobs a few years back. Warm water accentuating pathogens in starfish leads to severe declines in predator pressure on sea urchins which creates population boom that overtakes the kelp. Ultimate cause is not the sea urchins, of course. They are just a symptom of the ecological perturbation. Ultimate cause is the warm water mass... and, probably, humans.

Have fun in Roatan! Hope to see you on Catalina on the 17th.
