This review needs to be separated by resort and dive op.
Subway Sports was very helpful and customer service oriented. We enjoyed the dive staff and boat operators immensely. On a day when I was severely motion sick the captain, according to my wife was super cautious while making our way back to the dock. (The hour long trip to the wreck was NOT worth it) At times some the dive masters were more interested in hunting lion fish than helping out the divers. The dive masters at Fantasy Island, last year, were much more attentive as far as pointing out fish and species. All in all I would dive with Subway Sports in a heartbeat. They lugged mine and my wifes gear they were courteous and super pleasant.
The Resort
I do not have much good to say about this place and will not stay there again.
First they forgot to pick us up at the airport and after an hour long wait we took a taxi of which they only gave us a partial credit at the bar. It wasnt until the second day we saw one of the restaurant staff smile. They use a 10 cup coffee maker for the whole resort so if it runs out you have to ask someone for more and they snarl at you while making more. We were told to ask for desserts but sometimes we were just too afraid to inconvenience the wait staff. On our first day we asked what time was supper and the response was 6:30 or 7:15. Once it was 7:30.
If it really is a dive resort you would think they would cater to divers.
When as divers we would return for lunch and supper we would ask what is in that and the response would be that was hamburgers or meat there is none left with no offer for substitute and definitely no smile. We asked for two towels almost every day for diving or the beach and my wife would want to be covered up on the walk from the dive boat to the room so we brought the beach towels to our room. After 3 days there was 3 days worth of towels sitting on our hotel room floor. I guess housekeeping is not expected to touch the beach towels. But I am sure I am expected to tip them.
A tip is something that is given warranted on service or something exceptional maybe a smile but these people seem to think that is a God given right to receive from the rich tourists.
Granted when we did receive good service from a young girl and a particular bartender we were sure to tip them right away and not wait until the end of the week. We thought that it may change the attitudes of the near the end of the week it was a bit better. The wait staff started to be more friendly and willing to serve. Personally, I am tired of coming to these 3rd world countries and the people treating us like we have money growing on trees in North America. The irony is I live in Guatemala I dont expect to be waited on hand and foot. I just want people to be pleasant. Is that too much to ask?
