Damn these numbers are making me cold already — I’d rather be on a warm humid rebreather loop in such conditions (and under a million undergarment layers and 3 drysuits)

But in ernst — why not consider a sealed reg for such near freezing waters?

Laziness mostly. I have like 6 MK25s Evos and 1 MK25. I haven't had an issue with them in these waters/temps (yet). I could switch to a sealed reg, but then I'd probably want to switch everything. And considering that prices have gone up for SP stuff almost everywhere, I'd probably lose out some money. Also effort in replacement etc.

Also, and perhaps more importantly. I don't want to get rid of my gold first stage.

About a ton of divers have Mk25s in the PNW (Seattle to BC) where we routinely have winter time water temps of 45f or slightly below and air temps at or near freezing on occasion. I have never heard of a Mk25 evo or non-Evo getting a free flow. I am sure it can happen, but its not likely.
