We used to have groups of Australians, Indians and Chinese over for weddings. They would try heaven and earth to get into a DSD all together, just so they could say they went diving and have a picture. I am not surprised this group went all the way to find someone to do it because, I think, they will have given a good amount of money. Some instructors find money more important than safety...
 
We were in Cozumel when this happened, and was diving TajMaha the following day. Conditions sucked, the halocline was insane, in fact the DM turned us back at the halfway point as he didn't like the unknown after the conditions of the entry. Might be my last Cenote dive.
 
I heard about this accident when I was in Mexico last year for my cave diving course. I asked my instructor about going there (Cenote Casa) for a checkout dive with my coursemate as we could enter unguided, but he was hesitant and advised a different one due to Casa having tidal flows, and fluctuating viz depending on rainfall. Later in the week he related the accident to us.
