Now that the Tulum airport is open and more and more carriers are flying into it has anyone tried this as an alternate to the Cancun bag drag?
Out of curiosity I checked with @cvchief van guy who does $50 USD vans from CUN to Playa and he runs vans from TQO also, but charges $200 USD. He apologized and told me the airport is run by the military and their 'bite' is very high but there is an ADO bus to Tulum.
Anyone else have any tips?

Can't recall where I saw it, but within the last week read somewhere that Tulum airport is not a good alternative to the Cancun bag drag. Transport costs (and twice the distance/time) to the PDC ferry were definitely part of it, but there were other issues that I can't recall all of -- just filed it away in my head to check again in a year or so.

Can’t remember where I saw it , but the transport costs may be exorbitant even from the airport to Tulum locally so costs may be high if you have to use a cab for any part of the journey. Did van guy say ADO bus goes straight to Tulum airport or just to the town ?

I've heard the same thing - that the taxi mafia has made transportation cost ridiculously expensive. I'm not I buy into the "military bite". If that were true then ADO fares should be expensive, too. Unless your destination is Tulum or south of it I see no reason to fly into Tulum.

100% monopoly on transport out of tulum airport by taxis. Flying to Cancun is the BEST OPTION compared to Tulum.

I flew in to Tulum about 5 weeks ago. The airport is about as far from the PDC ferry as Cancun(way outside of Tulum), but there is NO traffic (at least not for me). ADO is running, but service is limited (I believe is shuts down at 6PM) Taxis are there, but expect at 2000 peso fair best case to PDC. I rented a car (MEX rent a car was VERY easy and I was driving out of the airport 30 minutes after landing including customs, immigration and rental car) since I was first visiting Xoc Ha for a week and then up to PDC for about 10 days. For 12 days rental car is was about $450 inclusive. I take the ferry across from PDC to Cozumel for a few days of diving and good restaurants but mainly dive cenotes these days. On the way back, the rent a car return was a bummer. Mex Rent a car does not do check in at the site, so I had to wait in an hour line at the rental car station in the airport. The rest of Tulum airport exit was easy.

I don't have regrets, but I think I will fly into cancun and take the ADO bus down to PDC (classic bag drag). I can hope that Tulum takes some of the load off cancun airport.

It appears that the military (SEDENA) was forced to back off on the transportation fees.

That appears to be a rate chart if I was driving there to pick up a friend. 100 pesos for a car to enter the pick up zone?
Next question is how much is a taxi? The distance is 1/2 of the Cancun to Tulum drive.

As best as I can tell the fees are for hire vehicles not for private vehicles that are not operating 'for hire'. Here is a link to the airport website showing the current official for hire rates which in my opinion are extremely high.
