My partner and I will be traveling on our Honeymoon to Bali in late July early August. We are both very new to diving but by our honeymoon will be PADI Open water and Advanced open water certified but will have completed around 10 dives total prior to our honeymoon. We will be staying in Tulamben for about 3 days and are looking to do 3-4 dives a day. My question is does anyone have any recommendations on dive shops in the area. We will also need to rent equipment (BCD, wetsuit, regulator; I have my own dive computer but my partner doesn't). Our hotel normally works with Dive Concepts but I haven't found any good information on this shop. Thanks for your help.

Liberty Dive Resort, which I used last June, is excellent in all respects. Comfortable accommodation, good in-house restaurant and very good dive centre also within the premises. They will almost certainly provide you with your own guide if you are doing 3 to 4 dives a day. They are friendly, reasonably priced and efficient. But I am not sure what the policy of the dive shop is if you are staying in another hotel.

In July-August a 3mm full suit should suffice in Tulamben per se but if you plan to dive elsewhere in Bali, especially Nusa Penida etc, you'd be better off with a 5mm full suit.

Unless you don't want to do so, try to factor in a couple of night dives while you are in Tulamben. The night dive over the Liberty wreck and Sereya Secrets is really owrth it.

Since you are only there for a few days and it's your honeymoon I would just dive with the shop your hotel uses. We love staying and diving in the same place as this way we get to know our fellow divers better. You can hire all the equipment in most shops and Tulamben diving really is awesome.

I hope you have a wonderful wedding

S10--Welcome to SB! Take Hinterman's advice, dive with Liberty Dive. We are back for the 3d time with them next month and the reason we return is because LDR makes diving there simple and safe. You want a place with good guides and a smooth running operation, LDR has their act together for divers.

You will find the diving in Tulamben to be most excellent and easy...if you have hard soled booties! (Those beach rocks are not soft.) Be warned however, Indonesia is habit forming! // ww

Another happy customer of LDR here. Well run shop, great guides, and you'll have your own private guide there. They let you make your own schedule and will pick you up at another hotel.

Indonesia is habit forming... I would be a charter member of Indonesia Anonymous if there was such a group.

Yeah, LDR gets my vote but... ahumm I had a look at LDR dive rates for 2015, no more price per day diving, no more own equipment discount, no more >12 dives discounts... All in all it seems the dive prices raised by more 15% within a year, and since it's quoted in USD, it's minimum a 30% increase against all other currencies like EUR, IDR, etc..

Another vote for LDR here. Positioned right ontop of the Liberty wreck - thanks for the info on the updated price structure Luko.

Thanks for the heads up Luko.
I've been enjoying the appreciating $, and with the declining IDR I've been expecting resorts that price in IDR or EUR to raise their rates. And with the fuel subsidy
ended they have higher costs. Or it could just be that LDR is still a great deal at $30/tank. The room rates have gone up a bit also but are still a great value.
They are still a great deal by my standards.

Well fuel should not be a critical commodity for doing mainly shore diving, i would understand it for Nusa Lembongan or Padang Bai speedboats, but this is Tulamben... though it's a fact in indonesia that every merchant looooves the fuel increase excuse to skyrocket their prices. 30USD for a shore dive is getting a tad exensive in my book, while it should be around 20USD for similar conditions in the Phils for example, take the nitrox out.
Add on top of that we poor euro payers have to deal with currency exchange loss against the USD, while many dive centers in Bali have EUR or IDR published prices, furthermore I am not sure LDR patronage is mainly american, I don't even remember having met a US client in 4 stays at LDR, mostly european and aussies. ;)

i'll have to talk with Wayan...

Well, Wayan will still cut a bit of a deal. We're back at LDR next month and it's 10% off the $30 USD/dive price for nitrox. Room rates are up a bit from last November but still, great diving at a very decent price and the new bungalow area is really well done. Plus this time Wayan promises us Uji along with Nyoman for guides. (Must mean Luko is out of town!) // ww
